Post-operative Delirium after Cardiac Surgery: Can it be Prevented?
نویسنده
چکیده
Studies have found that risk of delirium after open heart surgeries to be higher as compared to other surgeries and twice as much incidence after valve surgeries as compared to CABG. The cause of delirium after cardiac surgery is not very well known. The triggering of this situation points towards inflammation, acute stress responses and disruption of transmission of neurological pathways due to systemic inflammatory response syndrome, caused by the CPB process.

Despite advances in peri operative care, a significant percentage of elderly patients experience transient post operative delirium and/or long-term post-operative cognitive dysfunction (POCD). This chapter reviews the aetiology, clinical features, preventive strategies and treatment of these syndromes. Pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative risk factors for delirium and POCD followi...

INTRODUCTION Postoperative delirium is an important problem in patients undergoing major surgery. Cerebral oximetry is a non-invasive method to detect imbalances in the cerebral oxygen supply/demand-ratio. Low preoperative cerebral oxygen saturation (ScO₂) levels have been associated with postoperative delirium in non-cardiac surgery patients. The present prospective observational study determi...

BACKGROUND Risk factors for delirium following cardiac surgery are incompletely understood. The aim of this study was to investigate whether intra-operative pathophysiological alterations and therapeutic interventions influence the risk of post-operative delirium. METHODS This retrospective cohort study was performed in a 12-bed cardiosurgical intensive care unit (ICU) of a university hospita...
